Before the invention of the stationary bicycle, spinning classes frequently dissolved into aggressive cross-country bike races and dual-wheeled jousting matches. Stay in place and keep fit with today's Groupon: for $30, you get a five-class pass at CycleQuest Studio, located off of Shady Oak Road in Eden Prairie (a $65 value).
Under the guidance of experienced cyclists and studio founders Joe and Patti Ducosin, CycleQuest Studio instructors boldly pedal indoor cyclists to new levels of fitness in a friendly, community-based atmosphere. Class leaders will pace participants through various sprinting and climbing exercises and will provide instructions and encouragement to a steady soundtrack of upbeat music and medieval rowing chants. The open studio space houses 34 Keiser M3 stationary bikes placed on hardwood floors, high-definition large-screen TVs, and generous windows that provide ample natural light during daytime classes. CycleQuest Studio welcomes cyclists of all experience levels to hop aboard one of its eerily quiet bikes, each equipped with a computer to measure its rider's wattage output, distance, time, speed, and emotional maturity. First-timers are encouraged to select a beginner class, and should arrive 15 minutes early to meet their instructor and get properly seated on a bike. There is no required equipment, but each cyclist should bring a small towel and water bottle.
Instructors understand that students have busy schedules, so riders are free to come and go as necessary during class to ferry children or recently escaped zoo animals; however, bikes are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. Depending on intensity level, an hour of spinning can burn between 700 and 800 calories, so sweat-drenched spinsters are welcome to use the onsite locker room and showers, and should bring their own towel and lock. Scope out the schedule for class times.
