More than a century ago, settler Cabot Yerxa was digging a well when he unearthed natural hot springs bubbling beneath the Californian desert. Today, that same mineral-rich water is used to fill up the rejuvenating jacuzzis and to accent organic spa treatments at Aqua Soleil Hotel & Mineral Water Spa. In fact, H2O centers most of the experience here: the pools dot the surrounding area, and the palm-shaded courtyard features spa tubs and a pool fed by hot springs. In the onsite Soleil Spa, aestheticians help relieve tensions with detoxifying body treatments, and facials help erase the effects of aging with oils, chocolate, Mickey Mouse ears, and other natural elements. During the included jade massage-bed treatment in a private room, a guest lays down on a mattress filled with infrared balls, which massage the spine and legs with a soothing heat.
Elsewhere, the onsite restaurant draws from Italian and Mexican culinary traditions to prepare dinner and brunch FridaySaturday. Diners here can sip cocktails under the stars at an outdoor lounge with a concrete fire pit. Guests also enjoy hotel-provided complimentary continental breakfasts MondayFriday.
Potted flowers and landscape artwork give an earthy feel to the guest rooms, where wooden headboards and hanging lamps frame the queen beds. The queen rooms also face a tropical courtyard garden, where you can lounge on deck chairs under the shade of palm trees.
Though its situated a bit off the beaten path in the San Bernardino Mountain foothills, Desert Hot Springs draws in a fair amount of visitors for its natural mineral waters alone. They flow into Aqua Soleil and local spas and burble at temperatures of up to 148 degrees. The calming desert landscapes help lend to an air of peaceful seclusion.
In 1913, town founder Cabot Yerxa used material found throughout the desert to handcraft a Hopi-influenced pueblo home that towers four stories high. Its now immortalized as Cabot's Pueblo Museum and open for tours.
Meanwhile, theres a retro '50s- and '60s-influenced vibe to the architecture of Palm Springs. Located about 10 miles south of the hotel, the ritzy vacation spot features world-class golf courses and shopping centers.
