The Mecklenburg County Health Department estimates that approximately 150,180 people lived without insurance in Mecklenburg County in 2009. Since many of them live below the poverty line, they may delay medical treatment or be unable to afford it altogether, potentially putting their health at great risk.
If this Grassroots campaign raises $250, then Care Ring can fund two weeks worth of medical supplies for the Care Ring Low-Cost Clinic, such as wrist splints, gauze pads, syringes, antibiotic ointment, peroxide, bandages, and diabetic strips. Each additional $250 raised will fund another two weeks worth of supplies. The clinic admits patients for regular physicals, vaccines, and primary-care visits, and can provide prescriptions and referrals to partner providers when necessary. The supplies will be used to treat patients during preventative- and primary-care visits.

Care Ring was originally founded in 1955 to help prevent heart disease and manage work-site wellness. Over time, it adapted to serve the holistic needs of the community by providing preventative health services to local families. Today, the Low-Cost Clinic treats more than 4,000 uninsured and under-insured Mecklenburg County residents, with care including regular physicals, chronic-disease management, lab work, and sick visits. Partnering with the Mecklenburg County Medical Society and Charlotte Dental Society, 1,600 volunteer dentists and physicians provide these free and low-cost services for individuals who do not qualify for Medicaid. The organization also conducts a nurse home-visiting program that assists first-time mothers and their children. Care Rings programs help reduce the number of costly, unnecessary emergency-room visits, and aims to prevent patients health conditions from worsening when they cannot afford to seek medical care.
