According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every three adults ages 65 and older falls each year, and more than 19,000 older adults died from unintentional fall injuries in 2008. Rebuilding Together Oakland provides repairs, safety modifications, and energy upgrades for the homes of older adults to help them stay safe and independent.
Rebuilding Together Oaklands Safe at Home program transforms the houses of low-income seniors and people with disabilities with safety and efficiency modifications to prevent falls and improve accessibility. Safe at Home house remodelers install grab bars, raised toilet seats, shower seats, handheld showerheads, nightlights, and non-slip mats to prevent falls in accident-prone spots such as the bathroom and hallway. The program also outfits homes with emergency equipment including smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers, and performs checks of equipment that is already present in the home. If necessary, Safe at Home can also provide wheelchair ramps to improve mobility. Since its inception in 2007, Rebuilding Together Oakland has installed safety modifications in the homes of more than 475 homeowners.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help Rebuilding Together Oakland install home safety modifications. If G-Team members raise $500, then the Safe at Home program can provide home safety modifications for the bathroom and emergency equipment for one low-income senior or person with a disability. Each additional $10 raised will go toward funding home modifications for another person.
