The most graceful form of non-verbal communication, dance can express attraction, rebuke a coworkers requests to get off of their car, even convey the fact that you're not in the mood to dance. Gaze upon embodied messages with todays Groupon to Idaho Dance Theatre's Spring Show at the Boise State University's Special Events Center. Choose from nine ticket options for three days of performances: Friday, April 15 at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 16 at 8 p.m., or Sunday, April 17 at 2 p.m.
For its 22nd season of original ballet and modern dance, Idaho Dance Theatre, Boises first professional dance company and Boise State University's professional dance company in residence, presents the Spring Showa dynamic performance featuring four new pieces. First comes a portion of the longer work Orpheus and Euridice, which follows legendary lyre virtuoso Orpheus and oak nymph Euridice as they navigate the harder parts of marriage, such as watching your lover die from multiple viper bites, descending into the underworld, and convincing the heartless lord of the dead to give her back with a sad, sad song. The IDT dancers bring the epic romance to life with gravity-mocking leaps, graceful pirouettes, and one ill-advised look behind them. American composer Ricky Ian Gordon supplies the song cycle, while IDTs co-artistic director, Marla Hansen, guides the choreography and keeps the throwing of invisible lassos to a minimum.
The mood shifts from tragedy to boundless energy with co-artistic director Carl Rowe's premiere, which centers on the idea of physical and emotional release. Guest choreographer Jenn Freeman's newest work, "FLUX," focuses on the idea of change and permanence in our lives, while company dancer Gonzalo Valdez shakes things up with a futuristic three-part piece full of daring dance moves and stormtrooper can-can lines.
-   - IDT believes it is important for all people to experience dance. If you've never seen a dance performance before, IDT is a good first. Kat Thornton
-   - The beauty, strength and athleticism of contemporary dance, combined with the precision required to master it, is complimentary to our popular cultural pastimes. Idaho Dance Theatre is certainly one cultural treasure of which we can be proud. Denise Freeman
