Breaking bread with neighbors is one of life's greatest pleasures but, breaking neighbors with bread is a life jail sentence. Stay within the boundaries of the law with today's Groupon: for $7, you get $12 worth of scratch-made breakfast and lunch at Jumbars, located in Bethlehem.
Jumbars, winner of The Morning Call's 2010 readers choice award for Best Sunday brunch, is piloted by chef Paul Hoffert and his wife Mary. The cafe, bistro, and bakery hybrid, which focuses solely on breakfast and lunch, was named after Mary's great grandmother, Anna Jumbar, and the family focus pervades every aspect of the Jumbars experience. Everything on the menu is made in house, from scratch, right down the salad dressings, jams, and breads. Produce is locally grown at Scholl's Orchards, except for blackberries, which are stolen from British schoolchildrens' lunchboxes. Breakfast provides a variety of options both savory and sweet; some favorites include the Grilled Sticky Buns ($2.75) and the French Bread French Toast ($5.75), homemade French bread eggified with cinnamon and vanilla. Lunchtime lights off with the Greenwich St. Special ($8), an open faced sandwich of Boar's Head turkey and crisp granny smith apples topped with sharp cheddar cheese and honey Dijon mayo, while the bakery rises and shines through house-made bread and pies.
With potted flowers growing right outside the front door and jolly, colorful mugs nestled on hooks beneath shelves, Jumbars achieves a homey feeling without compromising good looks. There are no TVs in the establishment, just light jazz and classical music, hearkening back to a time when men were men, women were women, and children were clay statues.
Morning Call readers awarded Jumbars the title of "Best Sunday Brunch" in 2010 and the Lehigh Valley Style magazine named the restaurant the best cafe/bistro in 2007. TripAdvisors give it an average of four owl eyes. Eight Yelpers give Jumbars an average rating of 4.5 stars and 92% of Urbanspooners like it.
-   - It's an absolute treat to head over there for a leisurely weekend breakfast. The food is terrific and well worth the wait. Sj, Urbanspoon
-   - This family-owned and operated business is my absolute favorite in Bethlehem -- maybe in PA! Others have spoken to the inviting atmosphere, but I love the food just as much as the cozy dining room. RainyDayJenn, TripAdvisor
