Thirty tour-takers gather for one of five 90-minute themed tours of the Minnesota State Capitol. The Art & Artists tour teaches groups the history of the buildings historical murals, paintings, and sculptures and their creators, before visiting the German-style rathskeller cafe. The architecture tour focuses on acclaimed architect Cass Gilberts Beaux-Arts-style edifice, while the State Capitol Construction tour delves into the time, materials, and men it took to build before opening in 1905. A Civil War tour focuses on authentic battle flags from Minnesota regiments, battle paintings, and statues, which lead to discussion of Minnesotas role in the war, and the Women's History tour examines the struggle for womens suffrage in the Minnesota legislature and the governmental strides woman have taken since then.
In 1905, the Minnesota State Capitol building opened to the public; more than a century later, it continues to welcome more than 120,000 visitors each year to the home of the state governments three branches. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style by acclaimed architect Cass Gilbert, the building lays claim to worlds second-largest self-supporting marble dome, a title the dome maintains by working a second job as the back-up roof of the Metrodome. Within the white Georgia marble and Saint Cloudgranite exterior of the edifice, 67 senators and 134 representatives wrangle with politics while striding through stately corridors and chambers decorated by murals, sculptures, and paintings carefully selected by Gilbert to complement the buildings elegant style. Hand-painted arabesques and local flora swirl overhead on the vaulted ceilings, and the brushstrokes of John LaFarge depict legal concepts above the bench of Minnesotas supreme court.
