Outsiders Art & Collectibles' owner, Pamela Gutlon, champions emerging outsider artists, curating a gallery brimming with works by self-taught southern painters, sculptors, and crafters that the Durham Community Builder characterized as amazingly beautiful artwork that gives a unique insight into [the artists] stories and how they see the world. The selection eschews the orthodox pieces and Paul Newman salad-dressing labels of traditional galleries in favor of outsider art, a term coined in 1972 denoting artists without formal training, popularized by practitioners such as painter Henry Darger and songwriter Daniel Johnston. Within a cheerful yellow house, guests amble through the cozy gallery, weaving around the recycled roofing tarpaper of artist Alison Erca's vignettes or exchanging glances with the expressive faces of Bill Newton's stoneware pots. Several of the self-taught artists featured by Outsiders Art & Collectibles also have pieces on exhibit at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. Always with an eye toward the community, the gallery donates to Book Harvestan initiative to collect and distribute used booksgiving local children and young adults an academic advantage and local dogs something to puzzle over for the rest of their lives.
