Oxford Shakespeare Festival:
  • Deal Description

Although Shakespeare portrayed old kings as fierce tyrants ceaselessly haunted by the burdens of their reign, actual monarchs spent most of their time playing human Sudoku puzzles. Witness more productive rulers with today's Groupon to the Oxford Shakespeare Festival at the University of Mississippi. Choose from the following options:

    •   - For $7, you get one ticket to Twelfth Night at Meek Hall Auditorium on Sunday, June 12 at 2 p.m. (an $11 value for seniors, students, and children; a $14 value for adults).
    •   - For $7, you get one ticket to Twelfth Night at Meek Hall Auditorium on Saturday, July 2 at 8 p.m. (an $11 value for seniors, students, and children; a $14 value for adults).
    •   - For $7, you get one ticket to Twelfth Night at Meek Hall Auditorium on Friday, July 8 at 8 p.m. (an $11 value for seniors, students, and children; a $14 value for adults).
    •   - For $7, you get one ticket to Henry IV, Part 1 at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, June 18 at 8.p.m. (an $11 value for seniors, students, and children; a $14 value for adults).
    •   - For $9, you get one ticket to Camelot at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, June 23 at 8 p.m. (a $14 value for seniors, students, and children; an $18 value for adults).

Dedicating its 2011 slate to "A Season of Intrigue," the Oxford Shakespeare Festival presents three plays rife with mistaken identities and the lives of legendary kings. Helmed by artistic director Joe Turner Cantu, Twelfth Night transforms the intimate Meek Hall Auditorium into the shores of Illyria, where Viola, disguised as a young page, upends the courts of Duke Orsino and Lady Olivia, comically thrusting great humiliation upon the pompous Malvolio.

Just as Shakespeare's creations evolved from women cross-dressing as men to soldiers cross-dressing as kings, the season's other selections expand the festival to the exquisite Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts. In a cavernous acoustic performance chamber, the speeches and songs of old British kings delight audiences of up to 1,200. Directed by Brian Evans,Henry IV, Part 1 one of Shakespeare's most beloved historiesfollows Prince Hal and his corpulent comrade Falstaff as they mature from reckless jesters to saviors of the British throne, preventing the maniacal Hotspur from both conquering England and ruthlessly transforming the play's second half into a hoedown.

Camelot swaps the stylized cadences of Shakespearean verse for the mid-20th-century hyperrealism of song, dance, and mythical medieval heroes. Through songs such as "Camelot" and "If Ever I Would Leave You," the musical, written by Lerner and Loewe and directed by Julia Aubrey, tells the story of King Arthur and his knights; particularly Lancelot, whose love for the queen, Guinevere, threatens to warp the Round Table into a love triangle.
