Though coveting thy neighbor's wife or underground sprinkler system is beyond the pale, longing for a mouthful of his cuisine is an understandable desire. Today's Groupon satisfies desires to eat from the table of our nation's neighbor: for $15, you get $30 worth of Mexican fare and drinks at Rio Azul Mexican Bar & Grill in Palm Springs.
Rio Azul Mexican Bar & Grill's menu bursts with authentic Mexican fare, prepared fresh daily by Sinaloa, Mexico native and executive chef Ernesto Gastelum. Famished patrons can begin their feasting fiesta with chilis gueritos (yellow peppers) stuffed with shrimp, garlic, tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, and accompanied by a creamy soy sauce ($12.95). Tableside guacamole, a mashup of avocados, tomatoes, and onions in a deep-fried tortilla shell, comes kissed with lime juice under an aromatic sprig of cilantro mistletoe ($8.95).
The house specialty, paradillas, summons the fruits of land and sea to a cast-iron skillet, inviting intrepid eaters to try the combination of citrus-marinated grilled shrimp, bacon-wrapped shrimp stuffed with jalapeno and jack cheese, succulent quail, grilled chicken and steak with vegetables, fresh guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and four-cheese-blend chile con queso ($19.95/one person, $37.95/two people). Unlike a sleeping bag left in the garage for a decade, Rio Azul's rolled up enchiladas poblanas reveal shredded chicken and fresh vegetables in corn tortillas topped with homemade poblano pepper, chicken-cream sauce, and cotija cheese ($13.95).
Tequila makes a splashy entrance to Rio Azul's bar menu, encasing itself in a pinata of multifarious pours, including the Azul margarita, which shakes together silver tequila, Cointreau, DuBouchett Blue Caracao, lime, and agave nectar ($8.50). Tequila tasters can order the Rio margarita in one of four fruit flavors: strawberry, lime, mango or raspberry ($7.50). Rio Azul also prepares a dozen tropical and specialty drinks ($8 each) and imports traditional Mexican beer ($5) for tipplers to taste within the soothing deep blues, vibrant warm yellows, and taciturn muted reds of Rios inviting dining space.
Eight Yelpers give Rio Azul Mexican Bar & Grill a rare five-star average:
