Outdoor obstacle courses take inspiration from challenges found in nature, such as webs of vine, pools of mud, and fallen trees that span pits full of grizzly bears. The Big Bash Obstacle Dash hosts its inaugural 5-kilometer races along a mud-soaked obstacle course on 63 acres of open fields, forests, and natural ponds. Departing at 30-minute intervals, up to 20 teams or 300 free-for-all sprinters gather into each starting wave, divided by age and likelihood of spontaneous combustion. Equipped with a radio-frequency chip to track their overall time, racers hurtle through 12 obstacles and spectator participation zones. Scale four authentic WWII transport vehicles, crawl under paintball volleys fired by professional players, and play out Mario fantasies in a final plunge through a tube slide into a mud pit. Participants may pause for rests and hydrations at two water stations along the course.
For up to three hours after the final wave or 30 minutes before the first, racers gather for festivities catered by creator Michael Usowksi's restaurant, Tommy Gunns American BBQ (food and drinks are at an additional cost). Runners chase adrenaline's aftertaste with a complimentary celebratory brew, while local bands let free-range sound waves roam across the campgrounds and graze on unsuspecting picnics. Officials bestow trophies to the top three teams and the top three finishers of each gender and age group. Teams may don themed costumes to intimidate rival teams and verbally abusive wildlife, but all participants should arrive in proper running gear and warm clothing. Although aid and water stations bookend the medical-personnel-manned course, the roster of obstacles may pose a risk of injury to less experienced runners and inflexible marble statues. Proceeds from each race benefit The First Twenty, a firemen's wellness charity.
Though The Big Bash Obstacle Dash often runs online specials, today's Groupon is still the best discount available.
Dubbed The Last Renaissance Man by his best friends mom, Michael Usowksi has launched a medical website, sold fanny packs to dog owners, and run his own barbecue jointwith his white German shepherd, Luna, by his side wherever he goes. The Big Bash Obstacle Dash combines his three major interests: live music, feeding people, and challenging races. Michael is not a big fan of digging obstacle pits in 120-degree heat, but his favorite part of the Dash so far has been directing his website's video featurette, during which he commanded a man in a chicken suit to jump out of a natural pond only a couple feet deep.
