Some people are born to run; some are born to scramble up and down slopes like a Tokay gecko. Unleash your inner lizard with today's Groupon: for $55, you get one four-hour outdoor rock-climbing session (a $125 value) from The Southern Terrain. The setting for each ascending adventure is Mission Trails Regional Park, which is about 20 minutes northeast of downtown San Diego, or Dixon Lake in Escondido.
After a 15-minute, moderately paced hike to The Southern Terrain's designated climbing area, climbers will don helmet and harness in preparation for the cliff-conquering crusade. Under the supervision of The Southern Terrain's experienced guides, guests will hoist themselves to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape while fighting off distracting riddle-telling mountain goats. No climbing experience is necessary, because group instruction is given prior to the upward journey.
All technical gear and mountains are included, but hikers are responsible for bringing their own hiking shoes (special climbing shoes are not required unless you want to join the special-climbing-shoes club, a secret society devoted to telling candlelit ghost stories in tree houses.) Programs are conducted on most Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon during the summer, and on most Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m during spring and fall; call ahead to schedule your appointment.
Before heading for the hills, climbers must sign a waiver, which can be found here.
