Early humans developed the ability to sprint in order to chase down sprightly prey and invented long-distance running to escape from slowly approaching glaciers. Follow in their fossilized footsteps with this Groupon.
The eighth annual Maudie's Moonlight Margarita Run begins at the rock at the Johnson Creek trailhead, which sits next to the American Legion Hall. Runners complete an out-and-back 5K course, followed by a postrace party on the grounds of the American Legion Hall, where Maudie's Tex-Mex will serve dinner with margaritas as music floats through the air. Funds raised from the run will go to a variety of projects, including preserving the Johnson Creek Trailhead, building a boardwalk to fill a 1.1-mile gap in the trail, and planting new trees along the shores.
While standing on the balcony of a hotel in London, Lady Bird Johnson and Ann Butler, the wife of Austins mayor, admired the green trail that follows the Thames. The scene inspired them to hatch a plan to beautify their own waterways. Over the next three decades, in partnership with local garden clubs, they planted trees and flowers along the polluted shores of Lady Bird Lake, undoing centuries of damage from the flooding of the Colorado River.
Now the trail receives 1.5 million visitors each year and creates an oasis among Austin's skyscrapers and streets. The Trail Foundation implements improvements to the trails infrastructure and environment while honoring the vision of its founders. The foundation has built tree groves, landscape lighting, and a bathroom that reduces overall maintenance costs and blends into the natural environment without the use of an invisibility cloak.
