In their golden days, horses provided pioneers with wagon-pulling muscle, bank robbers with a getaway vehicle, and postmen with an excuse for slow mail delivery. Enjoy modern equine delights with today's Groupon for kids' horse and pony camps at Vail Stables, which opens for the season on Saturday, May 30. This Groupon expires on June 30. Choose between the following options:
Vail Stables corrals a posse of up to 10 riders for a saddled day-camp adventure, in which experienced instructors teach basic riding skills and horsemanship. For the half-day pony camp, budding equestrians ages 36 (who must be potty-trained) lead, groom, and saddle their small-statured steeds before donning a helmet and riding through the stables' grounds, reenacting Paul Revere's famous ride through the Wild West to warn of an impending alien attack. Throughout the camp's duration, pony-riding pupils are free to stop for a snack, get a drink, visit the restroom, or visit the petting zoo.
With the second option, first-time, beginner, and intermediate riders ages 614 learn the ins and outs of horseback riding, kicking off the course with grooming and leading. Mounted riders then don a helmet and gallop bareback before saddling up to learn obstacle-maneuvering, such as sidestepping large rocks or low-hanging clouds. Instructors match equine with equestrian, taking into account the horse's personality and favorite 1980s boy band. The newly minted cowboys and cowgirls finish by exploring the surrounding mountainous vistas on healthy fillies.
Camps run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.3:30 p.m. for full-day horse camps and 9 a.m.noon or 12:30 p.m.3:30 p.m. for half-day pony camps. Experienced riders can upgrade to the advanced horse camp for an additional fee. Check out the FAQ page for more information.
