Through December 18 (during the time this Groupon is redeemable), guided tours are available Thursday through Sunday at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. (and by appointment for groups). The museum is closed on November 24 and 25.
Seven historic buildings, dating to as early as the 1820's, dot the serene landscape of the Wolcott House Museum Complex, granting visitors a glimpse into the lives of Maumee Valley's 19th century pioneers and their descendants. Earning their fortune in construction, retail, and renting the swan-shaped paddleboats that meandered the waters of the newly completed Wabash and Erie Canals, James Wolcott and his wife, Mary Wells, started construction in 1827, on the museum's only original residence, a combination of federal and classical architectural styles. The current exhibit, Civil War Christmas on the Home Front, trots out editorial cartoons by Thomas Nast that depict holiday observances at home and on the battlefront and the earliest representations of St. Nick in his current jovial form as a shape-shifting reindeer farmer.
Costumed docents guide groups through the sprawling grounds, dropping historical droplets of wisdom about the elegant Monclova Country Church, the working-class Log House, and the Box Schoolhouse with an original schoolmaster's desk and chalkboards showcasing the first known request on behalf of a teacher to silence cell phones.
