With roots of its own stretching to 1875, the Worcester Historical Museum preserves artifacts dating back to the colonial era. Past exhibits have included a tribute to activist Abbie Hoffman, a celebration of Dr. Robert Goddard's first successful rocket launch, and recognition of Worcester's status as the birthplace of the yellow smiley face, which went on to great fame despite its origins as a horrifying scientific accident. Current visitors can examine the ongoing In Their Shirtsleeves display, which chronicles the rise of Worcester industry, or learn about the region's role in the Civil War through To Arms! Worcester County Answers the Call, a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the war, which runs through November 11.
A general-admission ticket also grants history buffs access to the Salisbury Mansion, a historic property constructed in 1772 and restored to its 1830s appearance, as well as the museum library, which houses a collection of 7,000 letters, records, and Garfield comic strips dating back to the colonial era. Today's Groupon also gets Worcester devotees $10 toward any merchandise in the museum's gift shop, which sells keepsakes such as Worcester postcard sets and decks of cards with local trivia ($2.50 each).
